On Isle Royale

The Rock Harbor Lodge is a comfortable hotel with modern rooms, bathrooms with decent showers, but no phone or TV

Our room opened onto a rear porch, with spectacular views of Rock Harbor.

The barrier islands across the harbor protect the main island from the worst of Lake Superior's fury.....

......but that protection only extends so far. These boulders are the "beach" outside our room's back door.

The view from our room was hard to take.....

.............really hard to take

The view is hard to take from elsewhere also.
See the driftwood on this spot where the ground is scoured? This is fully 30 feet above the lake on this nice, quiet day.

Rob is standing some 80 or 100 feet above lake level. Notice how plant life will establish itself everywhere it can.......notice all those places where it has not taken hold.

Enough analysis of the forces of nature......

at the end of the Scoville Trail

I'll let the next few pictures speak for themselves.

Away from the "edges" of the island, things got thick. Really THICK. I took this photo hoping to be able to show a moose's "trail". See it? It's there where the vegetation is thinner. See it? Moose travel here. We came to see moose. You know what we'd seen by now? Broken braches. Nice "trails" like this. A few tracks. Even a healthy sampling of moose poop.
So, see the trail? It's important. We traveled all this way to see moose. At least we have moose sign. Right?
