The Rest of the Trip
Thursday, Aug 9, 2001
Our next major adventure was on Thursday with friends from home whose family has a U.P. summer cottage. We planned to stay one night with them, but they talked us into staying another day and going on a canoe trip down the Manastique River.

We rented canoes at Germfask, MI. We had tried to guess the derivation of this town's name without success, so we asked. The answer we got was that the name was made up of the initials of the original settlers there......never would have guessed that.

It was a gorgeous afternoon. We got some decent exercise, but didn't strain ourselves too badly.

These are our hosts, Don
and Carolyn Story.

Carolyn said something to Sue about thinking a place in the mountains would be nice.

But this is the way things really are near Rapid River, MI on the Big Bay de Noc.

Lunch on the river. That handsome fellow on the right is Mark Story.

Mark wakes up a bit slow. That's Sarah Story behind the Foster Grants

We made a whirl-wind tour at Sault Saint Marie on Friday.

This was taken outside the bridge of the Valley Camp, a freighter built in the early 1900's which is now a museum. I thought this ship was huge until I saw a scale model of it next to one of a "modern" freighter.
Oh, that's Canada on the horizon.

These lifeboats from the Edmund Fitzgerald were among the displays in the Valley Camp.

One other stop we made Friday was in St. Ignace, MI. We could see Macinac Island from there, but didn't visit. This is the grave of Father Marquette.

Our last stop was at the home of David and Linda Shick in North Liberty, Indiana. Dave and Linda lived down the street from our first home in Wisconsin, before both families moved to other states.

I was a fascinating guest; I wonder how come this is the only photo of me from the entire trip.
Well, vacations ARE for resting, right?

The Shick's kids are both grown and gone, but they have filled the void with a couple of English setters. The dogs felt it was their duty to keep Laura warm during the night we were there.

And then we went home.
